Magic: The Gathering Expands to Film and TV

The Magic: The Gathering universe is finally moving beyond the card tables. Hasbro Entertainment and Legendary Entertainment have signed an agreement to create a full-fledged media franchise with films and TV series. The first project will be a full-length film, after which the media universe is planned to expand.

Previous Attempts at Adaptation

For die-hard MTG fans, this news may sound familiar. There have been several attempts to film the famous card game over the past 15 years. In 2008, Universal planned to make a series of films, but nothing came of it. In 2014, Hasbro was in talks with Twentieth Century Fox, but that effort also died out at the initial stage.

Netflix’s Involvement

Netflix has also shown interest in the franchise, with the streaming service announcing two different projects at once. According to Tudum from September 2024, an animated series based on MTG is already in production.

Legendary Entertainment’s Expertise

Legendary Entertainment is well-positioned to handle the franchise, with the studio’s track record including Dune and Dune: Part Two, Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy, and the Warcraft adaptation. Their experience in bringing complex and beloved worlds to life makes them an ideal choice for this ambitious project.

Expanding the MTG Universe

The collaboration between Hasbro and Legendary marks an exciting step in expanding the MTG universe. Fans can expect not only films and TV series but also potential spin-offs, merchandise, and possibly even theme park attractions. The goal is to create a rich and immersive media universe that captures the essence of the Magic: The Gathering experience.

Anticipation and Future Projects

With the first film already in development, anticipation is high among the MTG community. While specific details about the plot and cast remain under wraps, fans can look forward to a new era of storytelling that brings their favorite characters and settings to the screen. As the media universe expands, additional projects and collaborations are expected to be announced, further enriching the MTG franchise.
