The FamicomCD team has released a demo of the Super Mario Bros. CD-ROM hack of Super Mario World. This hack can be run on both real SNES hardware and emulators, providing a unique experience for fans of the classic Mario games.
An Unusual Project
Super Mario Bros. CD is an unusual project that attempts to reimagine what the classic NES version of Super Mario Bros. might look like on an imaginary CD console, similar to Sonic CD. Despite using the Super Mario World ROM as a basis, the game is stylized to resemble the original NES version.
Gameplay and Levels
The demo includes five levels:
- Grasslands
- Underground
- Athletic
- Golden Jungle
- Beach
The gameplay retains all the classic elements, including controlling Mario, collecting bonuses and coins, and fighting enemies.
Technical Advancements
Technically, the game uses the MSU-1 chip to play music and animated cutscenes, enhancing the overall experience. The game also makes heavy use of Mode 0, which allows for 4 layers at a time instead of the standard 2-3 layers in Super Mario World.
Improved Graphics
Graphically, the game looks significantly better than the original NES versions, while still retaining the classic 8-bit era Mario sprite. This blend of old and new creates a nostalgic yet fresh experience for players.
